TI expands automotive portfolio with high-speed CAN transceivers featuring integrated ESD protection for vehicle body networks

2013/10/25Texas Instruments  Analog

DALLAS (August 28, 2013) – Texas Instruments (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) today introduced two new 5-V controller area network (CAN) transceivers compliant with ISO 11898-2 and ISO 11898-5 standards for automotive networking. By integrating powered electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection of up to 8 kV for contact discharge and 15 kV for air discharge, the HVDA551-Q1 and HVDA553-Q1 reduce overall system cost and size, while offering design flexibility with two device configurations. The HVDA551-Q1 and HVDA553-Q1 meet the demanding requirements of US OEM testing without the need for external protection diodes and common-mode choke. Applications in which these new devices may be used are automotive body control modules, infotainment and advanced driver assist systems (ADAS), vehicle gateway nodes and rear-view camera modules. Order samples and find out more at www.ti.com/hvda551-q1-pr and www.ti.com/hvda553-q1-pr.

Key features and benefits of the HVDA551-Q1 and HVDA553-Q1:
●Reduced system cost: By using the HVDA551-Q1 or HVDA553-Q1, engineers can eliminate the need for up to two external protection diodes per transceiver, which reduces overall system cost compared to existing CAN transceivers that require external protection diodes.
● Reduced system size: With ESD protection integrated into the devices, the HVDA551-Q1 and HVDA553-Q1 reduce the design space normally required for up to two external ESD protection diodes per transceiver. This enables designers to create smaller boards that fit into space-constrained applications, such as in-vehicle gateway nodes and rear-view camera modules.
●Design flexibility: Designers have two transceiver choices to meet their system requirements, the HVDA551-Q1, with the ability to shift IO level voltages; and the HVDA553-Q1 with a common- mode bus stabilization output.
●System protection: Both devices also have under-voltage lock-out (UVLO) protection and dominant state timeout features.

Tools and support:
Design faster with the HVDA551-Q1 simulation model and the HVDA553-Q1 simulation model.

Availability, packaging and pricing
The HVDA551-Q1 and HVDA553-Q1 are pin-to-pin compatible and available for immediate orders in an 8-pin SOIC package priced at US$0.60 in 1,000-unit quantities.
