Singapore – May 29, 2012 – Molex Incorporated has re-introduced its range of halogen-free,lead-free Micro Serial Attached SCSI (Micro SAS) connectors for 1.8 inch storage drives. TheMicro SAS connectors now have an enhanced design that includes dual-drive stackedreceptacles with an integrated ground plane and a protective pin cover for greater reliability incompact storage applications.
The Micro SAS connectors represent the next-generation of 1.8 inch serial I/O storage solutionsand are designed for compact, high-speed, high-bandwidth SAS applications, including host busadapters (HBAs) and storage servers.
Leading the Molex family of Micro SAS plug and receptacle products is the 78495-0001 dualstackright angle receptacle. This halogen-free, through-hole interconnect stacks two highspeed1.8 inch Solid State Drives instead of one, giving storage users greater drive density thana single right angle equivalent (series 78395). The connector is also shipped with a pin coverthat protects all rear terminals from any damage caused by handling or shipment.
A key highlight of this dual-stack connector is the unique Integrated Ground Plane feature. Thisfeature consists of a specially stamped terminal that shields any cross talk between the twoadjacent high-speed differential pairs on each side of the plane, improving the connector'ssignal integrity and electrical speed. Because the Integrated Ground Plane replaces any needfor separate grounding pins to be used for the differential high-speed contact pairs, theconnector enables greater PCB space-savings since it terminates beneath the connector onlyas a single, throughhole soldertail.
One other key feature of the dual-stack connector is its unique overlapping, staggered terminaldesign within the differential signal pair located on each side of the Integrated Ground Plane inthe upper region. This overlapping configuration facilitates stronger coupling within thedifferential signal pair and induces higher signal integrity for the connector.
The unique 45-degree terminal bend design of the dual-stack receptacle allows a shorterelectrical path between the mating contacts and the PCB, and enables a smoother signaltransmission and, therefore, higher electrical performance of the connector. Fully compatiblewith Molex Micro SATA drives and enabling fast data transfer rates of up to 3Gbps, thisconnector satisfies the SAS 2.0 and the SFF-8486 Specifications.
Molex right angle straddle-mount plugs are available with (series 78528) and without (series78394) drive-holder features to meet low-profile height requirements. Together with the singleright angle receptacle (series 78395), these plugs feature a high data transfer speed of 6Gbpsand satisfy the SAS 2.0 and SFF-8486 Specifications.
