Eindhoven, Netherlands and Hamburg, Germany, October 10th, 2012 – NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NASDAQ: NXPI) has been selected by Dr. Neuhaus Telekommunikation GmbH, a leading supplier in industrial and M2M communication systems, to provide high-security chips for smart grid communication gateways. Joining forces with NXP Dr. Neuhaus is able to meet the most advanced smart grid security requirements in the industry.
NXP’s A-series is specifically designed to deliver the security, performance and long operational life required in the smart grid. It enables strong authentication to the cloud and secure remote management of smart metering systems, while assuring the integrity and confidentiality of data exchanged between head-end systems and metering equipments. The security modules integrate hardware cryptographic accelerators and support a broad range of symmetric as well as asymmetric (public key) cryptographic cipher suites and protocols, enabling compliance to widely used standards such as TLS and DLMS-COSEM in a turnkey solution.
The A-series builds upon NXP’s long-time expertise in security technology, as well as its leading positions in the overall Identification market and key market segments including eGovernment, banking, public transport and mobile transactions. It leverages the advanced IntegralSecurity™ architecture of NXP’s SmartMX™ high-security microcontrollers with more than 100 security features to protect the cryptographic keys and computations, as one of the elements of end-to-end system security. NXP has shipped more than one billion SmartMX chips to its customers including 86 out of 102 countries with ePassport projects and leading financial institutions worldwide.
“NXP’s security modules has been very easily and successfully integrated into our product. We chose NXP as our security partner because of its leadership in security and device authentication and we are now very excited to provide a robust, secure and innovative communication platform for the next Smart Grid projects,” said Ludger Böggering, director of product marketing at Dr. Neuhaus Telekommunikation.
“NXP is the security partner of choice for governments, organizations and companies worldwide, bringing security to all aspects of the smart life,” said Sami Nassar, general manager, Authentication product line, NXP Semiconductors. “As millions of devices get connected to the cloud, cyber security has become a growing concern for many utilities, infrastructure manufacturers and automation technology suppliers. NXP has the right solutions at hand, providing advanced turnkey security solutions for embedded applications.”
The communication gateway secured by NXP enables flexible wide-area communication via a range of communication technologies, using power line (PLC), DSL/LAN, WLAN networks or mobile networks (GPRS). Dr. Neuhaus will first deploy its gateway solution for a smart metering project in Belgium. The technology will be showcased in the NXP booth (Hall 1, F30) as well as the Dr. Neuhaus booth (Hall 1, C08a) at the 14th annual Metering, Billing/CRM Europe event in Amsterdam, to demonstrate how authentication technology will be used to secure critical components of smart grid infrastructure.
