Genial Light Co., Ltd., (Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture; President: Ryo Shimokita), the Graduate School for the Creation of New Photonics Industries (Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture; Chairman of the Board: Yoshiaki Kato) and Alps Electric Co., Ltd. (Ota-ku, Tokyo; President: Toshihiro Kuriyama) were granted the Special Award for Academic Startups 2016 for the development and sales of a module sensor for near-infrared spectroscopy of biological information. The Award for Academic Startups honors promising and outstanding university-launched startups and organizations and companies that contributed to the research and development and growth of the startup. Hosted by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), *1 the award was first given in 2014 and this was the third year.
The award was granted for the development of a sensor module with unique technologies that offer a broader range of application in a project for the module sensor for near-infrared spectroscopy of biological information. The project was jointly promoted by Genial Light and Alps Electric for the continuing exploitation of needs by the two companies with the expectation of substantial growth through commercialization and application.
Since the start of the business tie-up to develop the module sensor for near-infrared spectroscopy of biological information (AGVS) in April 2014, Genial Light and Alps Electric deepened their cooperative relationship to enhance technological development and improve the performance and quality of the product. They will further strengthen their partnership toward commercialization and the start of sales in fiscal 2016.
*1: NEDO joined as host in 2015.
[Module sensor for near-infrared spectroscopy of biological information (AGVS)] This is an ultra-compact, high-precision biological sensor fusing high-precision parts processing, high-density partsmounting, and production technology developed by Alps Electric over the years with Genial Light’s expertise and based on advanced optical measurement technology for medical and healthcare devices. Using the difference in absorbance, the sensor can measure delta-chain variant hemoglobin level, pulse, and oxygen level simultaneously with reduced physical restraint.
