Toshiba Releases Automotive Photorelay with Output Withstand Voltage of 900V, Housed in a Small Package

2024/10/28Toshiba  Automotive

-Suitable for 400V automotive battery systems-

October 24, 2024

KAWASAKI, Japan–Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation ("Toshiba") has launched “TLX9150M,“ an automotive photorelay[1] with an output withstand voltage of 900V (min) that is highly suitable for application in 400V automotive batteries. The new photorelay is housed in a small SO12L-T package. Volume shipments start today.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are using ever higher capacity and higher voltage batteries to improve cruising range and charge time, and battery management systems (BMS) to constantly monitor and manage the battery to maximize life and performance. They also monitor the isolation between the battery and the vehicle body to ensure safety. In BMS that must handle high voltages, electrically isolated photorelays are used.

Photorelays commonly used in battery systems must have a withstand voltage approximately twice that of the system voltage; an output withstand voltage of over 800V is necessary for a 400V system. TLX9150M is suitable for 400V systems as it has an output withstand voltage of 900V. It also uses the new SO12L-T package, which is 25% smaller[2] than Toshiba's SO16L-T package. This helps to miniaturize the battery unit and allows cost reduction. The pin pitch and pin layout are the same as those of the SO16L-T, enabling a common circuit board pattern design.

Notes:
[1] In photorelays, the primary (control) side and the secondary (switch) side are electrically isolated. Switches connected directly to the AC line and switches between equipment that differ in ground potential can be controlled through insulating barriers.
[2] Comparison of SO16L-T package size (10.3×10.0×2.45 mm) with SO12L-T package size (7.76×10.0×2.45 mm).
