Qualcomm 5G Summit Masterclass: How Snapdragon is changing the connected driving experience

Qualcomm
At the Qualcomm 5G Summit, Qualcomm Senior Director of Product Management Vivek Khanna delivered a Masterclass about how the Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform is changing the connected driving experience. Qualcomm is always planning for the future — and that means looking at how to implement the features of next generation connected driving experiences today. That foresight and constant attention to innovation led to the development of the Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform, which comprises four pillars: ubiquitous connectivity, improved safety, increased security, and the enablement of cloud based services. For connectivity, Qualcomm solutions provide quality 4G and 5G connectivity for automobiles, and reliable connectivity that vehicle operators can rely on time and again in a variety of locations and driving conditions. That means always on connections for cellular 4G and 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and navigation technologies for a consistent driving experience. Improved safety means always on, low latency, direct communication to the vehicle’s immediate surroundings. C-V2X communications can better direct vehicle traffic, help cars avoid collisions with one another, and make cities safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Previously when it came to security, automotive manufacturers would often ship vehicles with software that was finalized before manufacturing began, meaning that the final car had software or hardware that was months or even a year out of date by the time of release, creating potential security vulnerabilities. The Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform solves this by allowing for continuous updates to hardware and software to troubleshoot vulnerabilities as they are found. This same mentality extends to the enablement of cloud based services, the final pillar of the Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform. Automotive manufacturers can remotely change, improve, or activate different features in an automobile at any time. For example, a vehicle that releases in a region with only 4G support can later be updated via the cloud to support 5G connectivity, because 5G functionality is already implemented in the Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform. All of these components rely on the TCU of the Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform, or Telematics Control Unit, which includes 4G and 5G cellular connectivity, location services, and more. The TCU of the Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform is equipped for what automotive manufacturers need today — and for what vehicles may need 10 or more years from now in order to stay updated and connected. Qualcomm accomplishes all of this by working closely with automotive manufacturers to make sure that their needs are being met for this automotive platform — not just for today, but for the future as well.
