High-performance 2.4GHz SMD Antenna Offers Significant PCB Real-Estate Savings
Singapore – May 22, 2012 – Molex Incorporated is now offering a 2.4 GHz SMD on-ground antenna, the smallest Molded Interconnect Device antenna in the market. Developed with the power and precision of Laser Direct Structuring (LDS) technology, Molex's high-performance 2.4 GHz SMD antenna offers significant PCB real-estate savings and requires no PCB ground clearance. This lightweight antenna weighs only 0.03 g and is used in portable electronic devices based on Bluetooth*, Wi-Fi**, ZigBee*** and other wireless standards, including tablets, headsets, smart meters and more.
The antenna has an extremely small footprint, at only 3.00 x 3.00 x 4.00 mm (0.118 x 0.118 x 0.157 inch), and allows board makers to realize significant PCB space savings by leaving the ground layers in the PCB intact when used. It also frees up the same area on the reverse side of the PCB for additional component assemblies since it is mounted only on one side of the PCB.
Unlike most of the 2.4 GHz ceramic antennas offered in the market today, which require some degree of ground clearance in the PCB to achieve the required radiation properties, Molex's 2.4 GHz on-ground antenna requires no PCB ground clearance and is suitable for use on PCBs of various sizes. The LCP body of the antenna offers good thermal properties and provides a higher mechanical strain tolerance than do ceramic ones. The accuracy and precision of the LDS process, in manufacturing, ensure consistent RF performance.
“OEMs and other device makers are under a lot of pressure to make 2.4 GHz wireless implementations highly compact. Molex is now offering the smallest SMD antenna in its class, for optimal use of PCB space,” said Ellen McMillan, antenna business unit VP & GM, commercial products division, Molex. “This antenna not only cuts BOM costs, the surface mount design means highly efficient assembly and a faster time to market for our customers.”
The 2.4 GHz SMD on-ground antenna is a monopole antenna with an omni-directional radiation pattern and requires only simple stripline matching on the PCB itself, without the need for discrete components. A stripline is a line conductor trace sandwiched between two reference planes and the dielectric material of the PCB. A single discrete series component can be used, however, to offset the antenna resonance frequency if required, due to loading effects by components near the antenna.
The antenna is fully compatible with SMD and reflow processes and is usable as a standalone device without the need for cable connection. It offers users greater ease of component integration, assembly and lower cost. The antenna is RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, and comes in standard tape-on-reel packaging.
