Lightning surge protection circuit

The surge protection element is a thyristor type semiconductor element that conducts by applying a specified voltage.
It is widely used as a lightning surge protection in communication equipment.
1 TSS: Thyristor type silicon surge protection element. It absorbs guided thunder superimposed on the communication line and protects communication equipment.

The tyristor type surge protection element can design the holding current (IH) to be large and automatic circuit recovery possible.

It can be used for analog or digital communication systems.

5 Application example
The steep surge is absorbed by the surge protection element, and the surge of a particularly large energy can be effectirvely protected by using gas tube arrester (GDT) or zinc oxide varistor in combination.
Selection procedure
1 Determining the off voltage VDRM.
The off voltage VDRM is determined from the maximum power supply voltage VB applied to the device
2 Determining the clamping voltage VCL
The clamping voltage VCL is determined from the maximum withstand voltage of the circuit (IC, LSI) to be protected.
3 Determining the surge resistance ITSM
The surge capability ITSM of the device is determined from the supposed surge current waveform.
4 Determining the holding current IH
The circuit short-circuit current IL is obtained from the maximum power supply voltage VB and the circuit impedance RL and IL>HL is gauranteed as self-restoration operation after the surge protection element operation. (Check the temperature characteristic chart because the holding current IH has temperature dependence)
5 Confirming the junction capacitance
Consider the dull waveform with high frequency and confirm the junction capacitance Cj of the surge protection element.
